PARKS AROUND THE U.S.A.

In the United States we have city parks, county parks, state parks, and national parks.† A well-know city park is Central Park in New York City.

This park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in the 1800ís; he is often called the Father of American Landscape Architecture due to his innovative designs.

Exploring the way around the USA from park to park and from state to state is an ideal way to see the all the beauty of nature here in our country.

NATIONAL PARKS IN THE U.S.A.

National Parks in the U.S.A. are so diversified that a summary here cannot be made. The system of National Parks began with Yellowstone National Park in the western US. Since that time the growth expanded to include every US State and Territories.

Some are historical in nature, such as Gettysburg National Park in PA, and others are biodiversity significant and act as a refuge for wildlife, plants, and land.

The United States is so vast and diversified that each of the National Parks need to be visited and enjoyed for their special qualities that add to our great country.

HISTORIC NATIONAL PARKS-

CIVIL WAR 1861-1865

Many National Parks for the Historic Civil War are in MD,PA, and VA. The photos here are from Antietam Battlefield. Imagine standing in the same place that your great, great grandfather did during the battle! It is quite an experience and brings alive the story of the battle.

If you have a relative that served during the war and know what unit he served with, the National Park Service personnel can assist you in locating the unitís place on their maps. Then you can travel to that spot and see where your relative spent his war times.

Belle Grove manor house was built in 1794 by Isaac Hite, Jr., one of the leaders of the Shenandoah Valley's Anglo-German community. Isaac Hite brought his bride, Nelly Conway Madison, sister of James Madison, to Belle Grove in 1783. The design of the house was influenced by Thomas Jefferson's architectural genius. A focus of valley life, the house survived Union General Sheridan's occupation during the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek.

Once described as "the most splendid building west of the Blue Ridge," Belle Grove Plantation is one of the most imposing and important structures of its time remaining in Virginiaís historic Shenandoah Valley. The farmstead is still used to display regional arts and crafts, merging Irish, English and German traditions.Ē
